East Lansing, Mich. – No. 2 Michigan State suffered just its second loss of the season on Sunday, falling on the road at No. 25 Purdue, 2-1. The difference in the game was a penalty kick awarded to the home team less than two minutes into the second half that determined the final score despite the Spartans (10-2-2, 6-2-0 B1G) pushing for an equalizer over the balance of the game.
The Boilers (, who had a slight edge in offensive statistics in the opening frame, took the 2-1 lead on a penalty kick in the 47th minute, which was converted by Irene Campo for her sixth goal of the season. Purdue spent the remainder of the second half with a much more physical, defensive posture as the Spartans outshot the home team 6-1 (4-1 on net), and Purdue picked up two yellow cards to go with their 10 second-half fouls (18-10 in the game).
Each team scored in the opening minutes of the game. MSU struck first on Kayla Briggs' sixth goal of the season off a setup from Ella Janz and Kaleigh McPherson. Purdue evened the score in the eighth minute on a goal by Emilia Deppe, a shot that looked to be intended to be harder than it was but redirected just enough to the left to elude a diving Noelle Henning to tie the game.
The goalkeepers may have been the story of the day, as each made impressive saves to keep the game close. In the 25th minute, Henning punched a Megan Santa Cruz shot over the crossbar; it was one of her five first-half stops. She finished with a season-best six saves, while Purdue's Grace Miller made four of her six in the second half.
Both teams had goals pulled off the board – MSU's was a Kennedy Bell score in the first half that was ruled offsides, while Purdue's was in the 73rd minute when the Boilers thought they had pulled ahead 3-1 on what would have been Campo's second of the day.
SCORING
2' – PUR 0, MSU 1 | From the right side of the offensive third, Kaleigh McPherson sent the ball into the middle for Ella Janz. Janz threaded her pass through defenders and found Kayla Briggs at the penalty spot. Briggs got past her defender and was able to tap home her third goal of the season.
8' – PUR 1, MSU 1 | Rosa Maalouf fed Emelia Deppe just inside the top right of the box; Deppe's foot slid over the top of the ball as she kicked it netward, and the ball changed direction to its left, out of the reach of a diving Henning.
47' – PUR 2 , MSU 1 | Irene Campo converted a penalty kick into the bottom left corner.
