EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's basketball freshman guard Jase Richardson was selected by the Orlando Magic in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft Thursday night.
Richardson, the 25th pick in the first round, is the 12th Spartan to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft under Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo.
As a freshman at MSU, Richardson appeared in 36 games (15 starts), was second on the team in scoring with 12.1 points, grabbed 3.3 rebounds and handed out 1.9 assists in 25.3 minutes per game, second on the team. He was second on the team in field goal percentage (49.3 percent, 144-of-292), including shooting a team-best 41.2 percent from 3-point land (47-of-114) and 83.6 percent from the free throw line (102-of-122).
Richardson was a third team All-Big Ten selection by the league's coaches and the media, was selected to the league's All-Freshman Team and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times.
Richardson scored in double figures 23 times, including 14 of the last 15 games of the season when he moved into the starting lineup. In the final 15 games of the season, Richardson averaged 16.1 points and 4.6 rebounds, while shooting 47.0 percent from the floor (77-of-164), including 42.0 percent from 3-point land (29-of-69).
He scored at least 20 points six times, including a career-high 29 points in a win over Oregon on Feb. 8.
Richardson follows in the footsteps of his father, Jason Richardson, who was also a first-round pick in 2001 (No. 5, Golden State). His father played 14 years in the NBA, including two seasons (2010-12) with the Magic, where he averaged 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 109 starts.
Richardson joins a Magic roster that includes former Spartan Gary Harris, who was a first-round pick in 2014 (No. 19, Chicago) and has spent the last five seasons in Orlando.
Twenty-five Spartans have been selected in the NBA Draft under Izzo, including 24 since the 2000 NBA Draft. All-time, Michigan State has had 68 players selected in the NBA Draft.
