MSU overtaken by Nebraska in opening day of action of conference tourney.
OMAHA, Neb. -- Twelfth-seeded Michigan State baseball was overtaken by eighth-seeded Nebraska late Tuesday night in the third and final game of the opening day of the 2025 Big Ten Conference Baseball Tournament, Presented by IFS.ai, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Neb., site of the NCAA Men's College World Series, as the Spartans were topped by the Huskers, 5-4 in 10 innings.
MSU led early, scoring in the top of the first for an early 1-0 advantage, only to have Nebraska tie it in the home half of the first inning. The Spartans plated a pair in the second stanza and added another in the fifth frame to open a 4-1 lead. Nebraska scored two in the sixth to close to 4-3, then added a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extras and then scored the game-winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th.
Michigan State is now 28-26 overall, while Nebraska moves to 29-27. The Spartans conclude B1G Tournament action on Thursday, May 22 against No. 1 seed and conference regular-season co-champion Oregon at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT.Â
"Well, obviously that was a tough one to lose," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I thought out guys pitched it well all night long. I thought Nebraska really threw it well too, and defensively they were really good, they kept bringing arms out of the pen that I thought were outstanding. I'm just really proud of our guys, proud of the way they competed and proud of the way they represented Michigan State. We've got one more left on Thursday and we'll be ready to go for that one, but it's a tough one to lose tonight.
Spartan junior pitcher Joseph Dzierwa, who was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year on Tuesday afternoon, went 6.0 IP, scattering three runs, two earned, on seven hits, while striking out six.Â
The six strikeouts give him 104 for the season, becoming the fifth Spartan pitcher in program history to reach the 100 K milestone, and the first since Nick Bates in 2002 with 100, with Dzierwa passing Bates and finishing at No. 4 on the single-season strikeout list.
It also gives him 255 for his career, holding at No. 3 on MSU's career strikeout list.
Sophomore infielder Ryan McKay was 1-for-4 with a walk, notching one RBI and two runs scored. Junior outfielder Nick Williams was 2-for-5, senior infielder Sam Busch was 1-for-4 with a ribbie and a walk, knocking an RBI double in the first inning to plate McKay and the early Spartan advantage.
Junior infielder Randy Seymour was 1-for-4, sophomore outfielder Parker Picot was 1-for-4 with a run scored, while freshman infielder Dayton Murphy was 1-for-3. Senior outfielder JT Sokolove drew two walks, scoring one run after reaching on a free pass.Â
After Dzierwa on the mound, sophomore Garrett Brewer went 2.2 IP with three hits, one run, one K and one walk, while senior Dominic Pianto went 1.0 inning with two hits, one run and two strikeouts.
MSU takes on No. 1 seed and B1G regular-season co-champion Oregon on Thursday, May 22, also at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT.
