MSU defeated by UM in game two of series.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State baseball was downed by Michigan on Saturday afternoon at UM's Ray Fisher Stadium in game two of the three-game Big Ten Conference series, in a final score of 9-2.
MSU is now 23-18 overall and 9-11 in B1G action, while UM moves to 25-17 and 10-10 in conference competition. The Spartans were defeated in the series, as the Wolverine won Friday night's opener, 8-2. The home team has now won the last three weekend series between MSU and UM, entering Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m.
Michigan State had six hits Saturday, with half of them coming from sophomore outfielder Parker Picot, who was 3-for-4 with a double. Junior infielder Randy Seymour, senior outfielder Nick Williams and senior designated hitter Noah Bright added a hit apiece, all coming in the ninth inning as the Spartans tried to mount a comeback.
"Similar to yesterday, I didn't think we played poorly," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "They hit a couple balls hard today. I think we made a lot of weak contact today, and made a lot of weak contact early in the count. We had a hard time of getting the barrel of the bat to the ball. You've got to tip your hat to their pitchers a little bit, but at the same time, I think we need to be better offensively. We've shown that we are capable of that in the past, but for whatever reason, it didn't happen today. We'll be back at it tomorrow and just keep fighting and keep competing."
On the mound, junior starter Joseph Dzierwa went 6.0 IP, spraying six runs, three earned, on 10 hits, with three strikeouts and no walks.
"Joseph's stuff is good, he didn't walk anyone and struck out three today," Boss said. "They do a nice job of putting the ball in play, especially with two strikes, and again, it was a little bit like yesterday too; I thought we made a couple pretty good pitches, and unfortunately, didn't get anything to show for it."
Michigan knocked out 13 hits, including four for extra bases. Both the Spartans and Wolverines left seven runners on base, including MSU leaving the bases loaded in the third, coming away with one run in the frame, but leaving the bases full of Spartans.
"They'd flip a ball into the outfield, then all of a sudden, they get a barrel to the ball and it turns into a big inning," Boss said. "We had the bases loaded with one out there early in the game, and then chase the ball out of the strike zone for strike three, and then miss our pitch, and don't come away with anything. And that's, you know, those that's a difference in the game."
Senior reliever Dominic Pianto pitched the final 2.0 IP, scattering three runs on three hits with one K.
Michigan opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with four runs on four hits, taking advantage of an MSU error, to open 4-0 lead.
Michigan State countered in the top of the third with a run, as senior outfielder JT Sokolove drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch RBI, driving in Bright, who led off with a walk, but the Spartan rally came to a close leaving the bases loaded.
UM added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run, extending its lead to 5-1. The Spartans quickly countered with Picot's second hit of the day with a double down the left-field line to lead off the top of the fifth and MSU looked to be in business. However, the rally fizzled nearly as quickly as it started as Michigan starting pitcher David Lally Jr. snared a scorching line drive off the bat of sophomore infielder Ryan McKay, and doubled up Picot at second to end the inning and the Spartan threat.
Michigan added a run in the fourth and one in the sixth, before three in the eighth to stretch its lead to 9-1.
Just like Friday night, the Spartans didn't go down without a fight, as Seymour smacked a single to right center to lead off the frame. N.Williams followed with a single to center, preceding Bright lacing an RBI single to left center, and Seymour scampered around to score from second. However a strikeout and double play put an end to the Spartan rally in the inning as well as the game.
MSU and UM will wrap up the weekend schedule on Sunday at 1 p.m.
