East Lansing, Mich. -- Four Spartan standouts have earned All-Big Ten honors for the 2024-25 season, highlighted by Big Ten Player of the Year Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.) and Goaltender of the Year Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.).Â
Â
Howard, Augustine, and junior defender Matt Basgall (Lake Forest, Ill.) all earned First Team All-Big Ten honors, and junior Karsen Dorwart (Sherwood, Ore.) was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection for the second consecutive season.Â
Â
Howard is a favorite to make the Hobey Baker Top Ten and was the Big Ten Scoring Champion with 33 points, 17 assists, and 1.38 points per game in conference contests. Overall, Howard has delivered 24 goals and 47 points in MSU's 35 games. He is third in the country in goals, eighth in points and third in both points (1.34) and goals per game (0.69). He has the most goals for any Spartan since the 1999-2000 season when Adam Hall recorded 26 and is closing in on MSU's first 50-point season since Taro Hirose in 2018-19. The junior is the third Spartan to be named B1G Player of the Year: goaltender Jake Hildebrand was MSU's first in 2015, and Hirose claimed honors in 2019.Â
Â
Augustine is a Hobey Baker candidate, a Richter Award semifinalist, and a finalist for the prestigious AAU Sullivan Award, given to the top amateur athlete in the United States. He is MSU's second Goaltender of the Year selection, following Hildebrand in 2015. Augustine was a finalist for the award for the second straight season.   A Second Team All-Big Ten pick a year ago, Augustine earned First Team this season.   He currently leads the Big Ten in wins (18, eighth NCAA), save percentage (.925, 11th NCAA) and goals against average (2.02, 12th NCAA), and is third in games played (28), minutes played (1695:28), and third in saves (723).  Augustine and the Spartans have not lost back-to-back games in 2024-25; he has completed every one of his starts and has no penalty minutes. In addition to his prowess in the Spartan crease, Augustine cemented his place in international hockey history by becoming the first American goaltender to win back-to-back gold medals at the IIHF World Junior Championships, and along the way became the winningest goaltender in Team USA history at the event.Â
Â
Basgall earned First Team All-Big Ten honors for the first time in his career, and was also a finalist for Big Ten Defenseman of the Year honors. With 26 points, the junior is third on the team in points and is second to Howard on the team with 20 assists.  He is third among B1G blueliners in points (25) and tied for third in goals (6) and is fourth in assists (20). His 0.74 points per game ranks second among conference defensemen. He has also taken just three minor penalties this season, tied for the fewest among league rearguards.  Â
Â
Dorwart, among the team's top scorers in each of his three varsity seasons, earns Honorable Mention kudos for the second straight season. Coming off an off-season injury, Dorwart's season got off to a slow start before he regained his form – but he still managed to record a point in every MSU series in which he played. Dorwart boasts a 11-16-27 scoring line (third in goals and second in points) and he owns a +19 rating, tied for tops among forwards. He recorded 22 of his 27 points in Conference play. He shares the team lead in power play goals and points with Howard (4-7-11), and defenseman Basgall has 3-8-11. That was the trio who combined for MSU's lone goal on the power play in the Big Ten semifinals vs. Notre Dame.Â
Â
Top-ranked Michigan State (25-6-4) hosts No. 9 Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament championship game on Saturday at 7:30 pm. The Spartans captured their second consecutive Big Ten regular-season crown in 2024-25 and are looking to become the first-ever team in the (relatively short) history of the conference to win regular-season and tournament titles in consecutive seasons.
