Ten Spartans Place at Annual MSU Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling got its season underway on Saturday hosting the annual Michigan State Open inside historic Jenison Field House. The Spartans placed 10 student-athletes on the podium, including eight in the open bracket.
Redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Caleb Weiand, redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Luke Vanadia and redshirt junior 197-pounder Kael Wisler all advanced to the finals in their respective weight classes.
Weiand took send place at 125, winning his first two bouts of the tournament by fall pinning Nico Calello (Kent State) and Dustin Boyer (Unattached) before defeating Arizona State's Anee Vigil by tech fall (15-0). Weiand's finals bout with Ohio State's Vinny Kilkeary went to sudden victory where the Spartan was defeated, 4-1.
Vanadia won his first three bouts of the day to advance to the finals at 184 pounds, earning a tech fall in his opening match over Daniel Jezik (Northern Illinois), 19-4. Decisions over Adrien Cramer (Central Michigan), 10-8, and Holden Martin (Kent State), 8-1, sent him to the finals where he lost a narrow decision to Michigan's Codei Khawaja, 4-2.
Wisler won his first three bouts of the day with bonus points to advance to the finals at 197 pounds. Wisler's day started with a pin of Kennedy Wyatt (Bellarmine) in 6:23 before he majored Arizona State's Jacob Meissner, 8-0, in the quarters. His semi-final pin of fall Blake Schaffer (Kent State) in 3:57 sent him to the finals where he was defeated by Ohio State's Seth Shumate.
Several Spartans wrestled back to take third on Saturday including redshirt junior 125-pounder Nick Corday, redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Jaden Crumpler and freshman 149-pounder Evan Gosz (fresh/soph bracket). Taking fourth in the open bracket for MSU was redshirt sophomore heavyweight Max Vanadia and redshirt freshman 157-pounder Darius Marines. Redshirt sophomore 149-pounder Clayton Jones took fifth.
Freshman 141-pounder Jace Morgan rounded out the Spartan placers on Saturday taking fourth in the freshman/sophomore bracket.
