Spartan Men Finish Seventh at Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's cross country made a statement at the Nutttycombe Wisconsin Invitational with seventh-place finish at the highly-competitive Friday at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin.
On the men's side, 16 of the 32 teams that competed are currently ranked. The MSU men are currently ranked No. 16.
No. 3 New Mexico won the men's 8k Championship Race with 51 points, while No. 5 Colorado was second with 150 points. The Spartans finished seventh with 245 points and were the top Big Ten finisher. Host and No. 7 ranked Wisconsin finished ninth with 271 points.
UNM's Habtom Samuel finished first in a time of 22:58.0. Riley Hough was the top Big Ten finisher and ended seventh, crossing the line in 23:32.1.He was shy of his personal-best time of 22:50.8 set at the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 26. Thomas Westphal was the next Spartan to finish with a 23rd-place finish in 23:40.3. Moses Osterink (60th) finished with a time of 24:01.4, followed Jack Pennewell (69th), crossing in 24:06.7.Michael Hegarty rounded out the Michigan State top five (86th) with a time of time of 24.20.6.
On the women's side, 19 of the 31 teams attending the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational are ranked, including six of top 10. The Spartans are ranked No. 24 in the USTFCCCA polls. The MSU women finished 15th with 365 points and were the fourth-highest in the Big Ten. Northwestern was fifth with 225 points.
NC State's Grace Hartman was first with a time of 19:30.1. Rachel Forsyth was 20th to lead the Spartans, crossing the line in 20:14.6. Taylor Pangburn finished 74th just shy of her personal best with a time of 20:55.2. Her personal best was 20:43.5 at the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 26. Kate Stewart-Barnett was the third Spartan to cross the line, finishing 80th in 20:59.5. Paige Marchant (21:03.2) and Sophie Lucki (21:10.01) rounded out the top five for MSU.
In the women's 6k "B" race, the Spartans finished first with 29 points. Makenna Veen finished fifth overall and second among teams with a time of 21:22.6.Chloe Wall was 12th with a time of 21:39.4.
Brady McArdle was the top MSU runner in the men's 8k "B" race in a time of 24:51.4.
Following the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, Michigan State selected members of the team will compete at the Eastern Michigan Invite on Oct. 24.
