No. 16 Spartan Women's Basketball Drops First Home Game of the Season to Oregon

The loss snapped MSU's five-game winning streak.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite a ferocious fourth-quarter comeback, the No. 16/17 Michigan State women's basketball team dropped its first game at the Breslin Center this season, 63-59, against Oregon Thursday evening.
With the loss, the Spartan had their five-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 17-4 overall. Michigan State is 7-3 in Big Ten contests. Oregon has now won four-straight games, improving to 16-5 overall and holding a 7-3 record in league play.
MSU trailed by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, but were able to slowly chip away at the Oregon lead.
Despite the low-scoring game, the Spartan still had three players in double figures led by 14 points from both junior forward Grace VanSlooten and graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault, who also added a team-high nine rebounds. VanSlooten was playing her first game against her former squad. Despite a tough shooting night, junior guard Theryn Hallock added 12 points with three assists and three steals.
The Ducks were led by 12 points from Peyton Scott.
Oregon scored the first six points of the game, before a VanSlooten jumper got the Spartans on the board. The Ducks made five if their first seven shots to take a 11-2 lead, before the Spartan offense starting to head up. After an old-fashioned 3-point play by Sarah Rambus, Oregon to its first double-digit lead 16-6.The Ducks used an 8-0 run to make it a 21-6 game. A VanSlooten layup with 39 seconds left made it a 21-8 game at the end of the first period.
In the second quarter, an old-fashioned 3-point play by Ayrault made it a 10-point game 25-15. Michigan State was able to slow down the Oregon offense some, but was never to find an offense rhythm of its own. The Spartans did out-score the Ducks 15-14 in the second period, but Oregon led at the half 35-23. It was only the eighth time that MSU trailed after 20 minutes of action. It was the second-straight game that MSU was behind at the half, trailing at Michigan, 33-29. VanSlooten led MSU with six points at the half, while Hallock added five.
The Spartans looked to make a dent in the deficit in the third period, but the Ducks always had an answer. A Phillipina Kyei put back at the 6:26 mark gave Oregon its biggest lead of the game, 45-27. After a pair of Inés Sotelo free throws, the third quarter ended with MSU trailing 55-40. VanSlooten led the Spartans in the period with eight points.
Michigan State scored eight of the first nine points of the fourth quarter to cut the Oregon lead to 56-48 at the 7:06 mark. Ayrault made it a one possession game with under four minutes left in the period, 58-55. From that point, the Spartans couldn't get any closer, as the Ducks were able to hold on for the win. Hallock and Ayrault combined for 13 of Michigan State's 19 points during the fourth-quarter comeback. The Ducks were held to 1-for-11 shooting in the period, but made 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
The Spartans now hit the road to take on Northwestern Sunday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
Michigan State Women's Basketball Post-Game Notes
• No. 16/17 Michigan State had its five-game win streak snapped with the 63-59 loss to Oregon Thursday night, the Spartans' second-longest of the season after opening with an 11-game win streak.
• MSU was held to a season-low 59 points in Thursday's game, after scoring 59 points in the second-half alone last time out at Michigan (1/25/25) in the 88-58 Victory for MSU in Ann Arbor.
• Michigan State has held the opposition under 70 points in each of the last six games, winning the previous five before Thursday's loss . . . the Spartans are now 15-1 when holding opponents under 70, including 6-1 in B1G games.
• By limiting Oregon to 63 points, the Spartan defense had held the opposition to 63 points or less in the last three games as par t of four of the last five outings . . . Michigan State held Michigan to 58 points last time out, Penn State to 61 points (1/22/25) and before yielding 68 at Illinois (1/19/25), the Spartans kept Rutgers to 60 (1/15/25).
• Thursday's loss was the Spartans' first home defeat of the season and also halted MSU's 12-game home winning streak dating back to winning the last two home contests of last season and the previous 10 home games so far this season . . . it was MSU's first home loss in 354 days, with the Spartans' last home loss coming on Feb. 11, 2024 to No. 5/5 Ohio State (86-71).
• Over the last season-and-a-half, MSU has still won 23 of its last 26 home games at the Breslin Center, now 10-1 at home this season following logging a 13-2 ledger last season at home . . . overall, MSU has won 34 of its last 43 home games dating back to the 2022-23 season.
• The last three meetings between the Spartans and the Ducks have all been decided by six points or less.
• Thursday was the first time that MSU and Oregon met as Big Ten Conference foes . . . it was also the first overall meeting since Nov. 27, 2022 when the Spartans and Ducks met in Portland, Oregon as part of the Nike PK Invitational, with No. 18/18 UO winning, 86-78 . . . Thursday was also the first meeting in East Lansing since 2018, when the Spartans upset the No. 3/3 Ducks, 88-82.
• Oregon now leads the all-time series, 4-1, winning the last two match-ups.
