Spartan Men’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw Against Air Force
9/6/2024 10:08:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Junior midfielder Jonathan Stout scored his first goal of the season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer closed out a four-game homestand with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Air Force on Friday Night at DeMartin Stadium. The final game of the homestand was Red Cedar Rowdies Night to celebrate the Spartan student supporters.
With the tie, the Spartans stand to 1-2-2 this season, while the Falcons are now 0-3-1.
Despite leading on the scoreboard in shots 8-1, there was no scoring in the first half. Sophomore forward Richie Ludwig got the Spartan offense going early on with a pair of shots in the first 15 minutes of action. Neither team was too dangerous in the first 45 minutes with no shots on target.
The Spartans came out aggressive in the second half, looking to get on the scoreboard first. In the 60th minute, junior midfielder Jonathan Stout took a beautiful pass from graduate midfielder Shion Soga and drilled it past Air Force goalkeeper Brody Smith.
"I mean obviously Jonathan wants to score," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "It was good to see him get his first goal of the year, and hopefully that'll open him up and relax him a little more, so it's always good to see Jonathan get a goal."
Less than 30 seconds later, the Falcons found the equalizer. Ben Wunsch's pass found Ridge Owen for his first goal of the season to make it a 1-1 contest.
Both teams aggressively tried to find the game-winning goal in the remaining 30 minutes. In the 65th minute, Stout was looking for the brace, but this time Smith was able to collected the shot to keep the game tied.
MSU redshirt-junior goalkeeper Zac Kelly was tested several times, making two saves in the final 10 minutes of action.
For the game, MSU out-shot Air Force 16-10, while leading in corner kicks 7-4.
The Spartans now hit the road to complete non-conference action against Oakland on Monday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
