Michigan State Captures Road Opener 2-1 at Army
9/2/2023 12:19:00 AM | Men's Soccer
East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer captured a come-from-behind victory in its road opener with a 2-1 win against Army West Point on Friday in West Point, New York.
The Spartans improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2017 season. That season, Michigan State won its first seven games.
"It's a huge win for this team, for these guys, on the road," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "Army is really well-coached. As you can imagine, they're a class organization, and they're not going to give up."
Army came out fast with a goal in the eighth minute. Jubril Bamgbala blasted the ball to lower right corner, getting the pass from Joey Hickson to give the Black Knights a 1-0 advantage.
The Spartans tied the score in the 23rd minute when sophomore defender Josh Mason scored his first collegiate goal. Fellow sophomore defender Jeremy Sharp earned his second assist of the week as he found Mason with the equalizer.
Michigan State and Army headed into half time tied at 1-1.Â
"It wasn't our best first half. I challenged the guys at halftime," Rensing said. "For us to be 1-1 after not our best half, I thought we came out with a lot of passion and really took control in the second half. What a brilliant goal by Jonathan Stout. The gut and the grit that these guys showed in the last 12 minutes to hang on for a win was special."
The Spartans found the game-winning goal in the 66th minute. Sophomore forward Johnathan Stout scored his first goal of the season with a brilliant blast that put Michigan State on top for good.
The Golden Knights out-shot the Spartans 13-8 including 6-3 in shots on goal. Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Zav Kelly had another solid outing with five saves on the night.
Michigan State will remain on the East Coast to take on Villanova on Monday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m.
