Michigan State Falls Short in Back and Forth Battle with No. 3 Purdue, 64-63

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State had a shot to win the game with 1.8 seconds left, but could not connect as the Spartans fell to No. 3 Purdue, 64-63, in a game featuring 13 ties and eight lead changes at the Breslin Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Senior guard Tyson Walker scored 30 points – hitting 12-of-23 shots from the floor and 4-of-8 from 3-point land, while grabbing three rebounds to lead three players in double figures.
Junior guard A.J. Hoggard finished with 14 points and eight assists, while graduate forward Joey Hauser added 10 points and five rebounds. Junior forward Mady Sissoko grabbed a team-high eight rebounds..

- Michigan State trailed by five points (27-22), but used a 10-0 run stretching the final minutes of the first half – with a basket from freshman center Carson Cooper and a trey from Walker – and the opening minutes of the second half to take 37-32 lead on a jumper from Walker with 17 minutes to play.
- Purdue quickly tied the game at 37-all on a 3-pointer from Fletcher Loyer and from there it was neck-and-neck, with 10 seven ties and 10 lead changes in the second half.
- The Boilermakers took a 41-37 lead on a dunk from Zach Edey with 10:37 left, but MSU tied the game at 44-all on free throws from Walker, took a 46-44 lead on charity shots from sophomore guard Jaden Akins and took a 54-50 lead after a conventional three-point play from Hauser and a 3-pointer from Walker with 4:31 to play.
- The lead would change hands five more times in the final three minutes, with Loyer hitting a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left to give Purdue a 62-61 lead.
- Walker responded, hitting a jumper with 12 seconds left to give MSU the 63-62 lead, but Edey hit a layup with three seconds left to give Purdue the edge.
- A shot from Walker at the buzzer was off the mark as the Spartans fell short.
- Purdue had jumped out on top quickly in the first half, taking a 24-11 lead on a dunk from Caleb Furst with 5:47 to play.
- That's when the Spartans clicked, as MSU used a 14-1 run over the final 5:10 of the half, with Hoggard scoring six points and Walker leading the way with seven, including a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left that cut the lead to 27-25.
- Purdue scored 34 points in the paint, and had 32 points and 17 rebounds from junior center Zach Edey.
