Cross Country Teams Finish Third at Jeff Drenth Memorial

SHEPHERD, Mich. -- The Michigan State men's and women's cross country teams opened their seasons Friday at the Drenth Memorial Invitational, with both teams capturing third-place finishes.
The women's team was led by sophomore Olivia Millen, who placed tenth in the women's 5k with a time of 18:54. Junior Julia Bajt followed Millen in 11th, clocking 19:04. Graduate student Annika Linzmeier (14th, 19:06), sophomore Tess Piper (18th, 19:18), senior Allison Ziehl (19th, 19:18), junior Madison Price (20th, 19:24) and sophomore Abbey Carvey (23rd, 19:32) rounded out the top seven for the Spartans.
Junior Owen Huard recorded the highest finish of the day for the Spartans, finishing third in the men's 5k in 15:15. Junior Luke Perrelli (13th, 15:50), sophomore Gage Killewald (17th, 16:02) and junior Tyler Pritchett (18th, 16:03) recorded top-20 finishes for the Green and White.
The Jeff Drenth Memorial is named after the late Jeff Drenth, brother to MSU's former Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Walt Drenth. Jeff, who passed away while training in 1986, is a member of the Central Michigan University Marcy Weston Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Spartans cross country teams return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 at the Big Ten Preview hosted by Michigan. The women's 6k is slated for 9:30 a.m., while the men's 6k is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. The race will be held at the University of Michigan Golf Course, the site of the 2022 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
