SOUTH BEND, Ind. – One of the greatest stories in collegiate soccer, and the winningest season in program history came to a close Friday afternoon, as the No. 6 Michigan State women's soccer team fell in a 1-0 contest against the No. 17 TCU Horned Frogs in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Championships from Alumni Stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
Â
In an unprecedented rise to the highest levels of college soccer, the Spartans completed the 2022 season boasting a 17-3-3 overall record, the most successful single season in program history. The Green & White recorded the first officially recognized Big Ten Conference championship in the 36 years of Spartan women's soccer, compiling a 9-0-1 overall record in league play to register just the ninth undefeated B1G regular season title since 1994.
Â
The Spartans matched their best NCAA Tournament finish all-time, advancing to the second round for just the third time ever. Michigan State now boasts a 3-5 overall record in the Big Dance, advancing to the second round twice previously in 2005 and 2008. TCU's postseason journey continues on to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive season, rising to 14-4-5 overall on the year.
Â
Despite the final score, Michigan State dominated practically every aspect of the game, highlighted by maintaining nearly 60% of the possession. In the shot chart, MSU built up a 17-6 advantage highlighted by a 6-3 differential in shots on goal. The Spartans also more than doubled TCU's corner kick tally, registering an 8-3 margin in the statistic. Senior forward Camryn Evans led the way in the box score with a pair of shots on goal, while junior midfielder Justina Gaynor finished with a game-high four shots.
Â
Between the posts, TCU goalkeeper Lauren Kellett logged her 12th win of the 2022 campaign and improved to 12-4-5 overall for the Horned Frogs this season. Her 90 minute effort in goal included six saves and a complete game shutout. On the other side of the field, Spartan senior netminder Lauren Kozal completed a landmark 2022 season with a 17-3-3 individual record, recording a pair of saves in 90 minutes of work while being saddled with the loss.
Â
TCU struck while the iron was hot early in the first half, registering the opening goal of the game less than three minutes after kickoff. In a unique counterattack opportunity, the Horned Frogs served a ball ahead deep into the Spartan final third. Chaylyn Hubbard collected the ball and shipped it off to her left, where Camryn Lancaster was waiting about three yards outside of the penalty area. Lancaster took a couple of dribbles into the semicircle and pelted the ball into the back right corner of the net past the fully outstretched reach of MSU's Kozal. Â
Â
The Spartans composed themselves in the aftermath of the TCU goal and reasserted themselves by taking command of the possession battle for the remainder of the opening 45. The Green & White worked their way into some solid scoring chances, launching six shots on the offensive end while surrendering only three defensively. MSU's pressure on the Horned Frog back line culminated in a 4-2 differential in corner kicks, but the Spartans were unable to net the equalizer before TCU took its 1-0 lead into the halftime break.Â
Â
A defensive battle broke out in the second half, with both teams struggling to find opportunities on net early on. Although the Green & White ran up a wild edge in shot attempts throughout the period, the Horned Frog back line held strong right up through the 81st minute of play. As the clock turned to the 82nd, Michigan State found itself in position to log the equalizing goal. Both senior defender Raegan Cox and sophomore forward Jordyn Wickes rang shots off the crossbar less than 20 seconds apart, but the Spartans remained scoreless in the aftermath of the scoring chance. Despite a valiant comeback attempt on MSU's part, the Spartans historic 2022 campaign came to close by a 1-0 score.

Head Coach Jeff HoslerÂ
On what the 2022 season meant to him…Â
"I'm so proud of this team and what they were able to do this year. For our players who played their last game, they mean everything to us, and they gave everything to us today. For the group that will return, we got a lot of experience out of this and found a taste for how to get things done in the postseason. If anything, we will use this to stay just as hungry for success and move forward together as a group."Â
Â
On the keys to success in the postseason…Â
"Postseason play, I've been in a lot of games like this as a coach, it's all about details and discipline. It's about finding a way to execute in key moments. We were so close. We rang a couple of balls off the crossbar today. They had an incredible save on the one back-post ball to Cam (Evans). They made the one biggest play in the game; the one that put them ahead. We didn't find frame enough, and we weren't able to find a way to capitalize. For all of the possession and all of the territory that we took, we still had to find a way to put the ball into the back of the net."
Â
SCORING SUMMARYÂ
3' – Hubbard collected the ball and shipped it off to her left for Lancaster, who dribbled into the semicircle and pelted the ball into the back right corner of the net. TCU 1, MSU 0Â
