EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team kicked off the fall 2021 season with 4-0 victory over Detroit Mercy under the lights at DeMartin Stadium on Thursday night.Â
Â
This is the tenth-straight season the Spartans have remained unbeaten in their season opener and the sixth-straight season MSU has opened its season at home.Â
Â
The Jeff Hosler era began with a goal in the second minute of the opening half. Graduate transfer Ava Cook attempted a shot 12 yards out from the Detroit goal that was deflected by a defending Titan. She regained possession and took a shot that hit off the defender's leg and soared into the back left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead and game-winning goal.Â
Â
Fifteen minutes later MSU again took charge with another successful shot from a new member of the squad. Mya Fregoli set up a shot to the right side of the goal to Bella Jodzis, who sent a successful cross kick over to transfer Justina Gaynor for a sliding kick past the Titans goalkeeper and into the net.Â
Â
Michigan State outpaced the Titans in the first frame with 16 shot attempts to Detroit Mercy's single attempt. The Spartans totaled eight shots made on goal, three coming from Cook.Â
Â
With MSU maintaining possession for most of the second half, two more goals were scored for the 4-0 final. Jordyn Wickes, in a battle with the Detroit Mercy goalie at the top of the box, was able to win the ball and score unassisted in the 54th minute.Â
Â
Quickly responding again in the 60th minute, Gia Wahlberg and Danielle Stephan set up a long goal for Zivana Labovic. At the top of the box and from the right of the arc, Labovic sent the ball soaring from ten yards out for Michigan State's fourth and final goal.
