Spartans Have Solid Showing At U.S. Nationals

Hamdan finished third in Greco-Roman.
CORALVILLE, Iowa -- Michigan State wrestling had six representatives at the 2021 UWW Junior and Senior Nationals Tournament over the weekend at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
Highlighting the Spartans in action was Jordan Hamdan finishing third in the 63 kg division of Greco-Roman. Hamdan finished in third-place after defeating Aidan Nutter (Wisconsin), 6-1, in the consolation final, bouncing back from a 7-4 loss to eventual runner-up Richard Fedalen (Warhawks Wrestling), in the semifinals.
Hamdan was one of two Spartans wrestling in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle, joined by Andrew Chambal (GR: 60 kg/F: 61 kg).
Along with Hamdan and Chambal, other Spartans in the Junior Freestyle division were Tristan Lujan (57 kg) and Case Saldate (74 kg). In the Senior Freestyle division, MSU was represented by Cameron Caffey (98 kg) and assistant coach Willie Miklus (98 kg).
In addition to Hamdan's third-place finish, four other Spartan representatives made it to the quarterfinals.
Lujan lost to runner-up Ryan Miller (Pennsylvania RTC), 7-2, in the quarterfinals of the 57 kg division. Lujan advanced to the quarterfinals with a 10-0 major decision over Jeremiah Reno MO (Nebraska Wrestling Training Center).
Saldate was knocked off in quarterfinals of 74 kg division by Julian Ramirez (Spartan Combat RTC).
The Spartans had two representatives in the 92 kg division, and Caffey earned a bye in the round of 16, before getting edged by Scottie Boykin (TMWC/Spartan Combat RTC) in the quarterfinal round by VP01, 6-6. Miklus defeated Andrew Demos (Nebraska Golden Eagles Wrestling Club), 10-0 at 1:15 in the round of 16, before getting knocked off in the quarterfinal round by Timothy Dudley (Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club), 10-3.
