Seven Spartans Advance At B1G Championships

All seven are NCAA Qualifiers, MSU’s most under Coach Chandler; Spartans ninth after Day 1.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Michigan State wrestling sent 10 wrestlers to the Big Ten Championships, which opened Saturday at University Park, Pa., hosted by Penn State, at PSU's Bryce Jordan Center. Of the 10 Spartans, seven of them advanced to earn Top 8 honors entering Sunday's second day of competition, and automatic NCAA Qualifiers.
The seven NCAA Qualifiers is the most under head coach Roger Chandler.
Michigan State is ninth after Day 1 with 61 points. Iowa, the No. 1 team in the country, leads with 126.5 points, while host Penn State is second with 111.5 points.
First Round:
In the first round of consolations, Michigan State went 5-5 as Rayvon Foley, Peyton Omania, Chase Saldate, Layne Malczewski and Cameron Caffey earned their first wins of the day. Foley took on Indiana's Jacob Moran to begin the first round of consultation at 125 pounds. He won the match 11-1 which would earn him a spot in the quarterfinals. Omania kept it rolling at 149 pounds with a victory over Van Brill from Rutgers. Saldate was matched up with Licking of Nebraska in his first match of the day, and the Spartan was quick to set the tone and earn the win on with a fall at 3:31. Malczewski was up next for the Spartans in the win column in the 184-pound class as he picked up a win against Indiana's Cantu III, 5-4. Caffey added another Spartan win as he came up victorious as the No. 4 seed in the 197-pound class, with Indiana's Willham, 7-1.Â
In the 133-pound class, Jordan Hamadan lost a close match to Dryden of Minnesota. At 141 pounds, Matt Santos was unable to beat Duncan from Illinois as he lost his match by major decision. Jake Tucker took on Purdue's Nijenhuis in his first match of the day, but however was unable to capitalize on the mat as he lost a tough, 3-2 decision. Drew Hughes at 174 pounds picked up an unfortunate loss to Turley from the Rutgers squad and Christian Rebottaro at 285 was unable to capitalize against Ohio State's Orndorff.Â
Quarterfinal Rounds:Â
Moving onto the top 8, Foley and Caffey were able to come up strong with a pair of wins. Foley picked up his victory with a tech fall over Rutgers' Shawver at 17-4. Caffey picked up a close win against Davison from Northwestern, 6-5.Â
Omania, Saldate, and Malczewki dropped their second matches of the day, as Omania lost against Sasso from Ohio State, 9-1. Young from Iowa was able to capitalize over Saldate, 4-0 and Malczewski dropped his match to Nebraska's Venz, 13-6.Â
Semi-Finals:Â
Foley and Caffey made their ways to the semi-final rounds on Saturday but unfortunately both came up short in victory. Foley was unable to capitalize against top-seeded Lee of Iowa. Caffey, who entered his weight class as the No. 4 contender, lost a close battle to No. 1 seed Nebraska's Schultz, 2-1.Â
Top 8 / NCAA Qualifiers:
Foley, Hamdan, Saldate, Tucker, Hughes, Malczewski and Caffey will be in action Sunday contending for Top 8 spots, with Foley, Saldate, Tucker, Malczewski and Caffey, going for a finish in the top six.
Sunday:
Championship Sunday gets underway with Session III at 12 p.m. and Session IV at 4 p.m.
While no public tickets will be made available for the event due to virus mitigation restrictions, the Big Ten Network will air Sunday's finals live nationally and the Big Ten Network+ will live stream every mat.
