EAST LANSING, Mich. - Seven Michigan State wrestlers will represent Michigan State at the 2020 Division I NCAA Championships, March 19-21, at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Â
Six Spartan wrestlers earned automatic bids at the Big Ten Championships (March 7-8) in Piscataway, N.J. , with one earning a spot as an alternate.
Michigan State's qualifiers include redshirt senior Logan Griffin (125), redshirt juniors Alex Hrisopoulos (149), Jake Tucker (157), Drew Hughes (165), along with redshirt sophomore Cameron Caffey (184) and redshirt freshman Layne Malczewski (174). Redshirt senior Garrett Pepple was announced as an alternate at the 133 pound weight class.
Michigan State's six qualifiers are the most since six wrestlers qualified in 2012. Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler has led 13 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships since taking over as head coach in 2016-17. Hughes becomes Michigan State's first three-time NCAA qualifer since Dan Osterman (2011-13). Hughes holds a 3-4 overall record at the NCAA Championships in his two appearances in 2017 and 2019. Caffey, who went 2-2 last year at the NCAA Championships, returns to the NCAA Championships for the second-straight year. Griffin, Hrisopoulos, Tucker, Malczewski and Pepple head to the championships for the first time in their careers.Â
33 wrestlers will make up each weight class at the national tournament, and all 33 will be ranked with seeds, which will be revealed tomorrow night during the selection show. The selection show is slated for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, on NCAA.com
