Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Hunter Morse makes career-high 12 saves.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite a career-high 12 saves by redshirt-sophomore Hunter Morse, the Michigan State men's soccer team fell to Western Michigan, 1-0, Friday at DeMartin Stadium to open a two-game homestand.
With the loss, MSU falls to 0-4-2, while WMU improves to 4-2.
"It was frustrating. We're just not where we need to be. I thought some of our younger guys would be further along by now, and I think we need some leaders to step up as well. We weren't good in really any area, I went through that with the guys; from goalkeeping, back four, midfielders to the forwards," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "Having said that, honestly in the first half we had the game where we wanted it. We were controlling the tempo, we were wearing them down and then we gave up an easy counter and that's been the story of our season so far – we're giving up easy goals. I mean, it's a 1-v-1 there, and we can't get beat. We get beat, the guy finishes it and now we're chasing the game. It gives them life, gives them something to play for, so it's disappointing."
The young Spartans continue to add new players in with redshirt-freshman defender Colton Stanley earning his first career start. Overall, MSU 10 of the 13 Spartans that played were underclassmen.
Michigan State came out strong in the first half and were controlling the pace, but the Broncos had the first shot on goal in the fifth minute with a low blast by Eric Conerty. In the 18th minute, senior defender Michael Pimlott earned MSU's first shot on goal off of a MSU corner kick.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. After a long pass by Max Keenan, Charlie Sharp earned his second goal of the season, defeating Morse 1-v-1 with a shot that ricocheted off the post and into the mouth of the goal.
Despite the aggressive play, Western Michigan out-shot Michigan State 11-4 in the first 45 minutes of action. One of MSU's best chances came in the 54th minute when Isaac Walker saved a shot of the foot of sophomore forward Farai Mutatu.
The Broncos controlled the pace of the game for most of the second half, out-shooting the Spartans 9-5 in the second half.
The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 24 against No. 16 Notre Dame at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on FS1.
