McCutcheon Joins 1,000 Point Club as Spartans Fall to No. 14 Indiana in B1G Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Despite senior guard Taryn McCutcheon reaching 1,000 career points, Michigan State women's basketball dropped its Big Ten home opener to No. 14 Indiana, 79-67, Saturday night in Bloomington.
Late in the second quarter, McCutcheon drained a three to become the 28th member of the 1,000-point club and the first since Jenna Allen last season. The senior also led the team in scoring with 15 points.
Michigan State is now 7-5 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten action, while Indiana improves to 11-2 and 1-0 in league action. MSU is now 19-19 overall in league openers.
Aside from McCutcheon, three Spartans reached double figures in sophomore guard Nia Clouden and redshrt-senior forward Victoria Gaines, who both added 12 points. Freshman guard Julia Ayrault also added 10 points. McCutcheon and Ayrault were the Spartan leaders on the boards with six each.
Indiana was led by 23 points from senior Ali Patberg.
After MSU jumped out to an early 11-8 lead, the Hoosiers scored six-straight to go up 14-11 with 4:13 left in the quarter, leading to an MSU timeout. The rest of the quarter the teams traded leads with MSU ending the period with a 22-21 lead. Six different players had at least three points in the quarter.
The Spartans scored the first four of the second quarter to take a 25-21 lead. Ayrault's second trey of the game put the Spartan lead up to 29-23. McCutcheon's 1,000th point gave MSU its biggest lead of the game 37-25 with 2:05 remaining in the half as the Hoosiers called a timeout. Indiana was able to stop the bleeding, scoring the final six points of the half, but MSU took a 37-31 advantage into the locker room. McCutcheon and Gaines led MSU with 12 points apiece.
IU came out hot in the second half, scoring 10 of the first 12 points. The Spartans were out-scored by the Hoosiers 23-12 in the third quarter. The Hoosiers led heading into the final 10 minutes, 54-49. McCutcheon was MSU's leader in scoring in the third with five points.
Indiana took its first double-digit lead 63-52 with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Spartans were able to get it back to single digits once after a Nia Hollie jumper but could not get any closer than nine points.
MSU will then end 2019 with its home B1G opener against Nebraska on Tuesday, Dec. 31 in another BTN contest.

• With a 3-pointer with 2:05 left in the second quarter Taryn McCutcheon joined exclusive company with her 1,00th career point. She is the 28th Spartan to reach 1,000 points and the 10th under head coach Suzy Merchant. With 15 points on the night, she now has 1,009 career points.
• Sophomore guard Nia Clouden scored 12 points against the Hoosiers, reaching double figures for the 11th time this season.
• Michigan State is now 19-19 in Big Ten openers, having won six of their last nine. MSU is now 8-5 in league openers in Coach Merchant's 13 seasons. Last season, the Spartans won their opener in East Lansing against No. 16 Iowa, 84-70. The last time that Michigan State played Indiana in a B1G opener was to start the 2017-18 league action with MSU winning 68-46.
