EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling head coach Roger Chandler announced the Spartans' 2018-19 schedule on Wednesday.
MSU has eleven home events during the 2018-19 season starting with the Michigan State Open on November 3. Though Michigan State's wrestlers will compete unattached, it will be the first opportunity for fans to see the Spartans compete.
"The 2018-19 schedule is exciting for us because we have 10 dates of home competition in addition to the Michigan State Open, " Chandler said. "It doesn't happen very often where you can be in your home gym this many times throughout the season."
Michigan State will compete in two open events this season, heading to Annapolis, Maryland on November 17 to compete at the Navy Classic in addition to the Michigan State Open. MSU's first dual of the season will take place at home in Jenison Field House against the University of Buffalo on November 28.
"Being part of the Navy Classic is something I've wanted to do for a few years now," Chandler said. "I know it's a well-run event and it allows us to see many of the east coast teams that we wouldn't normally see until the NCAA tournament."
MSU's Big Ten slate kicks off against Indiana on December 7 before the team heads to Reno, Nevada and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Spartans are set to compete at the Reno Tournament of Champions on December 20, before heading to Florida for the South Beach Duals on December 29-30.
In Florida, Michigan State will compete against West Virginia and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on December 29, before meeting Wyoming and Kent State on December 30.
Michigan State's Big Ten tour resumes on January 11 against Illinois, starting a stretch of five-straight conference meets. The always tough Big Ten calendar features three teams that finished the 2017-18 season in the NWCA top five (Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan), and four additional teams that finished in the top 25 (Illinois, Rutgers, Northwestern, Purdue).
The 2018-19 season will be capped off with the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota on March 9 and the NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 21.
Michigan State placed 14th at the Big Ten Championships last season scoring 9.5 points. The Spartans have four individuals on the team this season with NCAA tournament experience. Redshirt senior Austin Eicher and junior Drew Hughes participated in 2017, sophomore Rayvon Foley in 2018, and redshirt senior transfer Anthony Tutolo in 2017 and 2018, who joined MSU from Kent State.
"We're excited to know that we have four individuals this year who have previous NCAA Championship experience," Chandler said. "We also have many young guys returning who got invaluable regular season experience last year who we are looking at to have breakout seasons. In addition, we have a very talented redshirt class from last year that will be looking to have a big impact this season."
