Cameron Caffey Wins Gold at 2018 Junior Pan-American Championships

Caffey earned gold medals in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State redshirt freshman wrestler Cameron Caffey earned two gold medals at the 2018 Junior Pan-American Championships in Fortaleza, Brazil over the weekend. Caffey earned Greco-Roman gold at 87 kg on Friday, August 17 prior to winning freestyle gold at 92kg on Sunday, August 19.
The Carbondale, Ill. native finished the weekend with a 7-0 record across both tournaments and won six of his seven matches by way of technical superiority. Click here for full results from the 2018 Junior Pan-American Championships.
"I'm proud of the commitment that Cam has given to himself to be the best he can be," MSU head coach Roger Chandler said. "He has big goals in place for the next four years and I know this past weekend was a step towards accomplishing those goals. This was his first time competing in an international event and he was able to double up by coming home with two gold medals. It really shows what he's capable of accomplishing."
Last season, Caffey wrestled at 184 and compiled a 22-6 record at open tournaments in a redshirt year. Caffey was one of four Spartans to win 20 matches and tied for third on the team with seven falls. In his first event as a collegiate wrestler, Caffey won the 184-pound title in the Freshman and Sophomore division at the MSU Open. Caffey also took first at the Storm Open and at the Alma Open.
