EAST LANSING, Mich. – Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes has been named Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week for Dec. 11 as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Hughes improved to 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in dual meets last Friday, earning a major decision over Indiana's Jake Hinz, 11-0, to score the only bonus points of the dual. Michigan State defeated Indiana by a final tally of 16-15 with Hughes' major decision being the difference. This is the first time Michigan State has started the Big Ten schedule 1-0 since the 2004-05 season, in which the Spartans opened the year with a 19-12 upset over No. 15-ranked Penn State.
Hughes is Michigan State's first Big Ten Wrestler of the Week since Nov. 7 of last season when Javier Gasca was honored. This is the second time Hughes has won the award with the last time being on Dec. 20, 2016 after he placed first at the Reno Tournament of Champions as a true freshman.
Michigan State is in action next on Thursday, Dec. 20 at the Reno Tournament of Champions. A total of 22 teams will compete in Reno, including American, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Old Dominion, Pacific, Stanford, The Citadel and Wyoming.
