Former Michigan State standout Sarah Burnham has earned LPGA stats for the upcoming 2019 season. Burnham earned her tour status by placing in the top 45 of inaugural LPGA Q-Series this past week and a half in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Â
"I'm pretty excited that I get a big bag like the pros now," Burnham said with a laugh. "I'm still kind of taking everything in. I surprised myself because I didn't think I would be able to get to the LPGA Tour this quickly."
Â
Burnham finished 5-over-par 581 and tied for 27th place in the eight-round tournament. The first four rounds were played Oct. 24-27, at Pinehurst No. 6 where Burnham finished with a 1-under-par 71 and 2-under-par 70, in rounds three and four, respectively.
Â
She was even or under par in three of the four final rounds played at Pinehurst No. 7, with a 72 in round five, 70 in round seven and 72 in round eight.
Â
"It's a grind," Burnham said of the eight-round format. "I didn't play well the first day but knew I had seven rounds left to make it up. You have to stay mentally tough because it's a marathon. I got nervous in last round but made a couple birdies early and was able to finish strong."
Â
Burnham, who hails from Maple Grove, Minnesota, is the most decorated golfer in MSU history. She is the only two-time Big Ten Player of the Year in Spartan history and is a three-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree.
Â
The 2018 second-team All-America selection ended her career as MSU's all-time leader in scoring average at 72.92. She owns three of the top-five season averages in program history, including a school record 70.68 set as a senior in 2017-18.
