EAST LANSING -- Michigan State men's golf head coach Casey Lubahn announced on Thursday (Nov. 15) the Spartans have signed Pierce Morrissey and Bradley Smithson to National Letters of Intent to join the program for the 2019-20 season.
"The 2019 class was a fun one for our staff and program," Lubahn said. "Pierce and Bradley are exceptional young men. They are talented, hard-working, athletic guys who love Michigan State and have wanted to be Spartans for quite some time. They have had great success on the course and in the classroom, and they are going to be phenomenal teammates. They define the blueprint we were hoping to follow for this important class."

Pierce Morrissey
Big Rapids, Michigan | Big Rapids
Lubahn on Morrissey: Pierce is a special guy. He has worked very hard to make himself a state champion and elite junior player. He is never satisfied and that determination to keep getting better will be vital as he enters college golf. Additionally, he comes from an amazing family and his values will drive his decision making day-in and day-out. He has been a leader at Big Rapids High School under a great coach in Mark Posey, and he will continue that when he wears the green and white.
Earned Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association (MIGCA) first-team All-State as a junior last season … Named to the MIGCA 2018 Super Team … Won the 2018 MHSAA Division 3 individual state championship at 3-over-par 147 (70-77) at Forest Akers West in leading Big Rapids High School to a second-place finish as a team … Averaged 74.06 in 17 tournaments as a junior … Three-time conference champion and two-time regional champion.

Bradley Smithson
Grand Rapids, Michigan | Forest Hills Eastern
Lubahn on Smithson: Bradley is a major talent and a very accomplished player. He committed quite early and never wavered – which was humbling for us. He believes in our program and wants to do all he can to win championships as a Spartan. He comes from a remarkable family that understands athletic excellence and the sacrifices that are required to perform at a high level. I truly believe he will impact our program immediately next fall. While he was the youngest to ever compete in the Michigan Open Championship and had great success early, his best golf is still ahead of him as he continues to refine his skillset and build an impressive resume. He receives great coaching under Brandon Roby, and he will bring his knowledge of the game with him to East Lansing.
Won the 2018 Michigan Boys Junior PGA Championship title at 5-under-par 139 … Earned All-State honors as a sophomore and junior and was named to the All-State honorable mention team as a freshman … Two-time all-district honoree … Youngest player to ever qualify and make the cut for the Michigan Open … Played in the 2018 National Junior PGA Championship … Named the 2017 Grand Rapids Press Boys Golfer of the Year … Tied for third place at the 2017 MHSAA Division 2 state championships … Completed in the 2018 Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
