Spartans Clash at Green and White Wrestle Off

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- One week ahead of the first home event of the season, the Michigan State wrestling team saw its first competitive environment of the season on Thursday, October 25 at the Green and White Wrestle Off at IM Sports West. Team Green defeated Team White by a 22-14 margin aided by a pair of tech falls.

Competition flared as six of the 10 weight classes had tightly-contested bouts.

Sophomore Rayvon Foley and redshirt junior Logan Griffin kicked things off in the final at 125, with Foley coming away on top 18-3. Foley, who represented Michigan State at the NCAA Championships a season ago took an 8-0 lead in the first period and extended that lead with three points in the second and seven in the third.

Graduate student Anthony Tutolo took advantage of his first appearance donning the green and white, facing off against redshirt freshman Warren Stanfield at 133. Tutolo, a transfer from Kent State and a former NCAA Championships qualifier, defeated Stanfield by a final mark of 15-0.

A third NCAA qualifier, redshirt senior Austin Eicher, competed against redshirt sophomore Alex Hrisopoulos at 141. Eicher defeated Hrisopoulos, 7-0, giving the white team back-to-back shut outs over the green team.

In one of the closest bouts of the evening, sophomore Jaden Enriquez battled freshman Peyton Omania at 149. Enriquez scored an escape in the second and Omania did the same in the third to force extra periods. In the third extra period, Enriquez slipped through the grasp on Omania to take the 2-1 win for team green.

At 157, redshirt sophomore Jake Tucker matched up against sophomore Jimmy Muscato. Tucker scored two takedowns and a 3-point near fall in the first period, but allowed two escapes to Muscato. In the second, Tucker extended his lead to 17-2 following an escape, a takedown, and two 4-point near falls.

All weight classes were closely contest from there on out, starting at 165 with redshirt junior Logan Ritchie defeating redshirt sophomore Austin Hiles, 3-2. Ritchie held a 3-1 lead going into the final period, but an escape by Hiles narrowed his lead.

174 saw redshirt sophomore and NCAA qualifier Drew Hughes challenge freshman Layne Malczewski. Hughes scored four points in the first period, but three penalties for stalling in the third saw Malzczewski claw his way back into the mix. Hughes amassed 3:52 of riding time to earn the 5-3 win for team green.

Fresh off a pair of gold medals at the Pan-American games, redshirt freshman Cam Caffey challenged a grizzled veteran in redshirt senior Shwan Shadaia. Shadaia led 4-3 heading into the third period, but Caffey found his stride and scored two takedowns in the period to earn an 8-5 victory.
Redshirt sophomore Nick May and redshirt freshman Brad Wilton duked it out at 197. A second period escape and a third period takedown by May proved to be the deciding factor as Wilton's two escapes weren't enough to defeat the Spartans' incumbent at 197.

The heavyweight match between redshirt sophomore Christian Rebottaro and redshirt freshman Chase Beard continued the trend of tightly contested match ups. Rebottaro scored an escape and a take down in second period which gave him enough points to overcome a pair of escapes by Beard.
