EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State wrestling will feature a newcomer weekly throughout the preseason in order to "Meet the Spartans" leading up to the 2018-19 season. This week, freshman Ian Burress (Poquoson, Va. / Poquoson High School) sat down with msuspartans.com to answer some questions.
1. Why did you choose to wrestle at Michigan State?
I was originally going to Michigan State strictly for engineering, but after walking off the mat in high school for the last time I just wasn't satisfied and wanted to train harder.
2. What are you most excited about as you begin your Spartan wrestling career?
I'm excited for new beginnings, to train harder and to face more talented people.
3. When did you first start wrestling?
I started wrestling when I was seven years old.
4. Favorite wrestling memory?
When I was ten years old I went to my first high school state wrestling tournament. With the noise and atmosphere I couldn't help but think, wow, when can I get there?
5. What's your major at Michigan State and why?
Mechanical Engineering because I lived within a rocks throw of a NASA facility for years. I interned and shadowed there several times. In my time there people showed me what engineering had to offer.
6. Who has taught you the most about wrestling growing up?
The people who taught me most were my high school coaches. Most of them had kids that were my age, which I grew up and wrestled on the same team with.
7. What superhero power would you have if you could choose one?
Teleportation. Why fly or have super speed when you could just teleport anywhere at that exact moment.
8. Favorite meal?
Bacon ranch style chicken and Greek pasta salad
9. Favorite TV show?
Sons of Anarchy, The Flash and Game of Thrones
10. Favorite thing to do besides wrestling?
I enjoy doing research or just plain work. I can't sit still when there's always something that needs to be done.
