EAST LANSING, Michigan - Michigan State women's tennis closed out its Big Ten road trip with a 5-2 victory at Iowa at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on Sunday, April 17. With a super tiebreaker victory, senior Emily Meyers tied Marina Bohrer for the most wins in singles play in MSU history.
Meyers dropped the opening set at No. 6 singles to Adorabol Huckleby, 3-6, but battled back to force a super tiebreaker, taking set two, 6-2. The Naperville, Illinois, native clinched the 73rd win of her career and 17th of the season with a 10-5 tiebreaker win.
"It was another great team win," said head coach Simone Jardim. "Getting the doubles point helped us tremendously, and we were able to win three first sets quickly. We are peaking at the right time."
The Spartans' (12-9, 4-5 B1G) duo of freshman Davina Nguyen and junior Athena Trouillot made quick work of Montana Crawford and Annette Dohanics, 6-1. After the Hawkeyes (10-15, 0-11 B1G) evened the tally with a victory on court two, junior Erin Faulkner and sophomore Allie Baer clinched the doubles point, downing Anastasia Reimchen and Zoe Douglas, 6-4.
Freshman Emily Metcalf's win streak moved to five with a convincing straight-set win at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1, against Dohanics. Nguyen moved MSU closer to clinching the match with her second win of the spring at No. 3. She quickly took the first set, 6-1, before finishing off Kristen Thomas, 6-2.
Faulkner's win on court one sealed the team contest. She came out of the gate strong, taking the first set, 6-2. Faulkner fought Reimchen to a 7-5 second set for her sixth win this season.
MSU next travels to Champaign on Friday, April 22, to take on Illinois. Actions begins at 4:30 p.m.
