CHARLESTON, S.C. - Michigan State pushed its win streak to four with a 4-3 victory over the College of Charleston on Thursday, March 10, at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point. Freshman Emily Metcalf won her team-best seventh-straight match of the spring.
"We pulled out a win, which is huge," said head coach Simone Jardim. "It was a really competitive match. Everyone played well, and doubles were really good. We got out to a good start with Metcalf and (Emily) Meyers winning easily and AT (Athena Trouillot) and D (Davina Nguyen) closing their match out."
The Emily-duo of Meyers and Metcalf dominated Liza Fieldsend and Brooke McAmis, 6-1, as freshman Davina Nguyen and junior Athena Trouillot clinched the doubles point for MSU with a 6-3 victory against Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke.
In singles, senior Emily Meyers made quick work of the Cougars' (9-4) Jane Jones at the No. 6 slot, shutting her out 6-0, 6-0. Meyers is 9-1 in dual matches and the victor of her last six outings. Metcalf is the only Spartan that can boast a longer win streak, claiming her seventh-straight match, 7-5, 6-4, over McAmis. It was Metcalf's first match this season at No. 3 singles.
"Meyers is competing very well and has come a long way," said Jardim. "She always has been a fighter and a good player always doing what takes to win. We can always count on her. Metcalf is so talented and has confidence. Those two are doing their thing. As a team, though, we are looking good and starting to get sharp around the edges and getting better."
In just her third match back this spring, junior Erin Faulkner won her second match of the dual season, defeating Liza Fieldsend, 7-6, 6-4, at the top spot.
MSU (8-3) returns to action on Friday, March 11, at Charleston Southern. Action from the Buccaneer Tennis Complex begins at 2 p.m.
