CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - The Michigan State women's golf team combined for its lowest round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday with a 9-over par 297. The Spartans improved their score in both of the final two rounds of the three-day, 54-hole event and finished with a 909 (309-303-297) to take 14th place in the prestigious tournament at the UNC Finley Golf Course.
Junior Sarah Burnham had her best round of the year on Sunday with a 4-under-par 68. Burnham started the day on the 16th hole and didn't record a bogie. She had four birdies, two of which came consecutively on the 12th and 13th holes. Burnham's even-par 216 (73-75-68) was good to put her in a tie for 13th place.
Sophomore Carolyn Markley finished the tournament tied for 31st place. Her 6-over-par 222 (74-72-76) was her lowest three-round total of the fall.
Like Burnham, freshman Paz Marfa Sans also had her best round of the year on Sunday with an even-par 72. She finished the tournament 11-over-par at 227 (77-78-72).
Freshman Priscilla Harding finished her first-career tournament with a 28-over-par 244 (85-78-81). Redshirt freshman Sybil Robinson was three shots back at 247 (85-81-81).
Wake Forest won the tournament with an 854 (282-287-285), five shots ahead of second place Alabama.
Michigan State will play its final tournament of the fall Oct. 28-30 when it returns to North Carolina to take part in the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington.
