Spartans in 10th Place at Mason Rudolph Championship

Carolyn Markley led MSU with a 1-over-par 73 on Friday at the Mason Rudolph Championship.
FRANKLIN, Tenn. â€" The Michigan State women's golf team shot a 7-over-par 295 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship on Friday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. The Spartans are in 10th place in the 17-team field, which features nine teams ranked in the Top 25 at the end of last season.
In her first appearance in the starting lineup, true freshman Carolyn Markley led the Spartans with a 1-over 73 and is tied for 27th place. She bogeyed three of her first six holes (No. 10-15) and finished 2-over through her first nine holes, but carded two birdies and six pars against just one bogey on holes 1-9 to finish at 1-over 73. She made her collegiate debut last weekend at the Mary Fossum Invitational playing as an individual.
Sarah Burnham, Alison Knowles and Gabby Yurik each shot 2-over 74 to round out the team scoring for the Spartans, while Katie Sharp was right behind at 3-over 75.
The Spartans started on hole 10 and were a combined 11-over-par (counting all five scores) while making the turn, but rallied on holes 1-9 and shot a combined 1-under. In addition, nine of MSU's 12 birdies on the day were on the front nine of the course.
After starting at 4-over on her first nine holes, Burnham was 2-under on her final nine, including two birdies and seven pars. Yurik also shot under par (-1) on her last nine holes.
Alabama is currently in first place after shooting a 6-under 282.
