EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 27 Northwestern Wildcats proved too much for the No. 37 Spartans. The Spartans fell, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon and are now 16-3 and 5-1 in the Big Ten.
"Today was not a setback," said head coach Simone Jardim. "Northwestern is a really good team and we made them earn that victory. I think we are ready to get back at it and are focusing on improving next weekend in Indiana."
The Wildcats came out hot on Sunday morning, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Freshman Lexi Baylis and junior Emily Meyers led at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, before the match was called.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Erin Faulkner continued her hot streak with a win over Alicia Barnett. Faulkner won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Faulkner is now 20-10 on the year in singles play and holds a perfect 6-0 record in Big Ten play.
The Spartans forced the Wildcats to three sets in three matches, but it was not enough. Meyers finished the day winning a third set tiebreaker over Jillian Rooney. Meyers won 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (5). Meyers improved to 19-10 on the year and 2-0 this weekend.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday as they travel to Indiana to play No. 43 Indiana on Saturday and No. 28 Purdue on Sunday.
