Alison Knowles Leads Spartans on Day One at Regional Challenge

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - In the first round of the spring season, the Michigan State women's golf team shot a 304 on Sunday in the opening round of the Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Spartans are currently in 14th place in the elite 16-team field, which features 10 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 25.
In her first round as a Spartan, junior Alison Knowles carded a 74 (37-37) to lead Michigan State on day one. Knowles, who played her first two seasons at Louisiana-Monroe and had to sit out the fall season, is tied for 28th place on the individual leaderboard.
Junior Gabby Yurik is tied for 43rd with a 5-over 76. Yurik shot a 5-over 40 on the front nine, but bounced back with an even-par 36 on the back nine, including two birdies and five pars.
Seniors Lindsey McPherson and Trisha Witherby rounded out the team's scoring with a 77, while freshman Sarah Burnham compiled an 82.
Competing as an individual, freshman Jacqueline Setas fired an 86.
