
Spartans Tame Broncos, 5-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team extended its winning streak to four and improved to 6-1 on the season with a 5-2 victory at Western Michigan Friday night. The Spartans won six matches in claiming their first road win of the season.
"I am very proud of the team sticking together and fighting as a team," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We knew that today was going to be a very hostile environment and that is what it was. I am just very proud of the team after today."
Michigan State clinched the doubles despite a rowdy crowd at Western Michigan on Friday evening. The team of senior Catherine Parenteau and freshman Allie Baer struck first in doubles play defeating Tracy Kuhle and Meika Ashby, 6-4. Junior Emily Meyers and freshman Lexi Baylis clinched the finals point in dramatic fashion, winning 7-6, taking the tiebreaker, 7-4. The match at No. 1 doubles with the sophomore duo of Athena Trouillot and Erin Faulkner finished tied at 6-6.
Lexi Baylis earned the first singles victory for Michigan State at No. 2 singles. Baylis defeated Olivia Myers, 6-2, 6-4.
At No. 6 singles, Emily Meyers defeated Yuriko Ono from Western Michigan, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Aslina Chua was victorious at No. 3 singles, defeating Ella Perinovic, 6-4, 6-2.
Athena Trouillot came from behind to clinch the Spartans' final victory of the day. Trouillot defeated Barbare Eristavi at No. 5 singles, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0. The Spartans return back to action on Sunday as they host IPFW at 5 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Courts.
