EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer led the Big Ten with 19 Academic All-Big Ten Selections. Overall, 102 Michigan State student-athletes were honored over the Spartans' seven fall sports.
"I am extremely proud of how the guys worked in the classroom this past year. Nineteen of the 22 eligible student-athletes were named Academic All-Big Ten. That's almost 90%," MSU head coach Damon Rensing.
After the Spartans' 19 honorees, Northwestern, Ohio State and Penn State all had 12 student-athletes earn All-Big Ten selections. Wisconsin was next with 11, while Rutgers followed with 10. Indiana had nine players honored, followed by Maryland with four and Michigan with three.
The Spartans are led by junior midfielder Andrew Herr, who also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this season. Michigan State had seven seniors honored: Josh Barens, Zach Bennett, Zach Carroll, Jerome Cristobal, Quinn McAnaney, Asa Miller and Jason Stacy.
"Leading the B1G for men's soccer is a credit to the student-athletes' work ethic and discipline, a credit to their parents for establishing good habits and time management skills, and certainly a credit to Jim Pignataro, Jeremy Flynn and the entire staff at the Clara-Bell Smith Center for their hard work supporting our student-athletes," Rensing said.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
