EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis head coach Simone Jardim announced the signing of Samantha Memije to the recruiting class of 2016. Memije comes to East Lansing as a five-star recruit from Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
"We are really excited to have Samantha join the team in the fall," said Jardim. "It seems so long ago she committed, but we are really looking forward to what she can do. She has been working hard to get ready for college. She is a powerful player and hits the ball very well. She will be able to have an impact right away, and I see her fitting right in and being a great addition to our team chemistry."
Memije had a national ranking as high of 53rd among the 2016 recruiting class. She has posted a record of 30-17 in her high school career at Gateway High School, including a mark of 17-6 against four-star recruits. Memije is unbeaten when facing recruits touted three-stars or less.
"I was really excited this morning to sign," said Memije. "I was able to sign my letter of intent at school with my friends and family. I feel like I am representing my high school because it is not common to have someone get an athletic scholarship to a big school like Michigan State. MSU has been my top choice, and it just felt like home. The campus and atmosphere were what I wanted. Coach Simone and coach Tyler (Faulkner) are great, and I just want to come in and help improve and play for a title."
Memije is the top-ranked player in the 2016 class out of Pennsylvania, and is currently ranked No. 10 in the mid-Atlantic region.
"She has a pop in her serve and sets things up very well with her forehand," Jardim said. "She has good volleys, but continues to work and get ready for college."
