CHAPEL HILL, N.C. â€" Redshirt sophomore Katie Sharp shot a career-low 4-under-par 68 in Friday's first round of the Tar Heel Invitational and leads the tournament heading into Saturday's second round.
As a team, the Spartans are in fifth place in the 18-team field with a 5-over 293. Thirteen of the 18 teams are ranked in the Golfweek Top 50.
Sharp, who started on the 10th hole, was even par through her first nine holes, but caught fire on holes 1-9. The Kendallville, Indiana, native birdied one and two, shot a par on three and four, then made three birdies in a row on five, six and seven. She closed with a par on eight and a bogey on nine. Sharp leads by one stroke over Duke's Leona Maguire, the 2014-15 WGCA and Golfweek National Player of the Year, who shot a 3-under 69.
"I hit a lot of fairways, I think I only missed one," said Sharp. "I was putting really well, and I was able to read the greens really well, and I hit a lot of greens which helped…I'm going to focus on my game and not worry about the results."
Sophomore Sarah Burnham and senior Alison Knowles each shot a 2-over 74 and are tied for 28th. Senior Gabby Yurik rounded out the team scoring with a 77, while freshman Carolyn Markley carded a 79.
Michigan State will tee off in Saturday's second round at 9:54 a.m. on hole one along with Louisville and North Carolina. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
