EAST LANSING, Mich. - The tandem of junior Athena Trouillot and freshman Davina Nguyen opened the Purdue Invite in West Lafayette with a strong performance in doubles on Friday, claiming two matches. The Spartans picked up three wins in singles play during the afternoon session.
"Doubles went well this morning," said head coach Simone Jardim. "They (Athena Trouillot and Davina Nguyen) played really well in the first match and again against Mississippi State. They have been playing really well together and had opportunities in their third match against Kansas."
Trouillot and Nguyen continued to build off their three-win opening weekend at the Wildcat Invite from Sept. 25-27 with a pair of wins on day one. The combo knocked off Adorabol Huckleby and Aimee Tarun of Iowa, 6-2, before advancing over Mississippi State's Louise Ronaldson and Kristina Vozniak, 6-3. Trouillot and Nguyen's run on the opening day was halted by the team of Smith Hinton and Anastasiya Rychagova of Kansas, 6-3.
"We had a lot more consistency and effort today, especially on the baselines. We just need to find that consistency that led to the results we had today and carry that into tomorrow. We need to be level on each day and not get beat because we are playing worse, but because we are playing a good team."
After being forced indoors due to high winds, MSU found more success in singles. Nguyen won her opening singles match, 7-6(5), 6-3, against Vozniak. Trouillot and sophomore Aslina Chua also found victory in their round one matchups. Trouillot tallied her team-high fourth win of the fall, knocking off Louisville's Sena Suswam in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Chua claimed her contest in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, over Grace Tapak of Illinois.
MSU continues play at the Purdue Invite on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Matches are currently scheduled to be played in the six-court indoor facility.
