The Spartans forced 14 Wildcat turnovers, leading to a 22-10 edge in points off turnovers, while MSU tied its season low with seven turnovers.
Michigan State held Northwestern to 1-9 shooting (11.1%) from the floor in overtime after the Wildcats shot 54.3 percent during regulation.
After starting off 6-11 (57.1%) from the free throw line in the first half, MSU hit 13-15 (86.6%) free throws in the second half and overtime combined.
With the overtime victory, MSU has now won 21 of the last 23 vs. Northwestern, bringing Tom Izzo's record against the Wildcats to 31-4 in his career.
Michigan State won its first overtime game, having dropped its previous three this season.
