The Spartans are tied with Mercer for sixth place, while South Florida and East Tennessee State lead the tournament with a 579. Michigan State's second-round 287 was the second-best of the second round just behind South Florida's 286.
Individually, sophomores Gareth Lappin and Sam Weatherhead were the leaders for the Spartans, tying for 20th after the first 36 holes. Lappin carded a 3-over 74 in both rounds. Weatherhead posted an 8-over 79 in the first round and rebounded nicely with a 2-under 69 in the second round, which was the best by a Spartan on the day.
Junior Mitch Rutledge (81-71-152) and sophomore Charlie Netzel (79-73-152) are tied for 27th at 10-over. Redshirt-sophomore Gates Muller completed the Michigan State quintet with a 16-over (78-80-158), which places him in 47th place.
The lowest round of the day came from Kent State's Sebastian Bendsen who recorded a 6-under 65 in the second round.
The Inverness Club was founded in 1903, and along with the University of Toledo, served as host for the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Inverness has also hosted four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships and one U.S. Amateur.
