Spartans Lead Mary Fossum Invitational After Day One

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team shot a 23-over-par 599 (307-292) in two rounds at the Mary Fossum Invitational on Saturday at Forest Akers West Golf Course and lead the 15-team tournament by seven shots heading into Sunday's third and final round. Notre Dame is in second place at 606 (309-297), followed by Toledo at 609 (308-301).
The Spartans' 15-shot improvement in the second round was fueled by freshman Sarah Burnham, who carded the best single-round of the day with a 2-under 70. Playing in her first collegiate tournament, the native of Maple Grove, Minnesota, shot a two-round total of 1-over 145 (75-70) and has a one-shot lead on the individual leaderboard over Grand Valley's Gabrielle Shipley (72-74--146). Burnham collected three birdies and 14 pars against just one bogey in the second round.
Junior Gabby Yurik (73-79--152) and senior Trisha Witherby (79-73--152) are both tied for 12th place at 8-over-par. Yurik was the team's low-scorer in the first round, while Witherby carded the second-best round of the afternoon for the Spartans.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Jacqueline Setas shot an 80 in the first round and 75 in the second round to sit at 11-over (155) for the day, which is tied for 21st. Senior Lindsey McPherson also shot 11-over (81-74) on Saturday.
Playing as individuals, Katie Sharp is tied for 33rd at 14-over (76-82--158), while Mariah Massa is tied for 47th (79-82--161). Jenny Sritragul compiled a 162 (79-83) and Mackenzie Johnson shot a 164 (81-83).
The tournament began on Saturday morning with cool temperatures (mid-40s), but the sunshine came out in the afternoon as the temperatures reached the high-50s.
