GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Michigan State rising senior women's golfer Lindsey McPherson shot a 2-over-par 73 (36-37) in the first round of the Meijer LPGA Classic Thursday at Blythefield Country Club. McPherson received a sponsor exemption from Meijer to play in the professional tournament.
The Flushing, Michigan, native is tied for 75th on the leaderboard - but is just one shot back of the projected cut (top 70). The field features 143 players.
Starting on the back nine, McPherson recorded two early birdies to stand at 2-under through her first three holes. She closed the back nine with a 1-over 36.
Making the turn and finishing on the front nine, McPherson started strong with a birdie on the par-5 No. 1 hole. She bogeyed holes No. 2 and No. 7, but recorded par on holes 3-6 and 8-9 to close at 2-over 73 on the par-71 course.
"I thought I played pretty solid today," said McPherson. "I thought I played better than what my score showed, but I thought I played really solid for being as nervous as I was today.
"I think the nerves stayed pretty much all day long, but I think what really helped is having my dad (Greg) there with me, so I tried to stick with him. A lot of players like to walk up in front of their caddie, but I like to walk with my dad. He reminds me of not golf, he reminds me of my dog that we brought with us, he's a hoot.
"So just kind of taking my mind off of golf for a while while we were out there, it really helped me focus. Just figuring out the numbers with him instead of using a range finder like you do in a regular tournament, figuring out the numbers, doing the math with him really just kind of helped me get away until I had to focus on my shot."
The second round of the Meijer LPGA Classic is set for Friday; follow live at LPGAScoring.com. McPherson will tee off at 1:38 p.m.
