"She's been very steady for us these last few games," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "She did another great job of organizing the team and made big stops when she was tested."
Freshman Jamie Cheslik scored the game's lone goal, in the seventh minute, when she outran a defender to a ball played into the box by Allyson Krause, and slipped one past the Titan goalkeeper near-post with a strong left-footed strike.
"Jamie has proven to be a great weapon and a special attacker," said Saxton. "We moved her to the center of the field, and thus far has thrived on being our central forward."
An injury forced MSU to shuffle its lineup midway through the first half. However, the Spartans adjusted to provide several key defensive stops in the second half, including two goal line clearances, to keep the Titans off the board.
"They were a great team that put a lot of pressure on us but we kept fighting," Saxton said. "We did a great job of not letting our opponent break us down through the middle of the field. We had some tired legs but experienced players like Shauna Stadelmaier stepped up. Jessica Kjellstrom also had one of the best games of her career; she was outstanding for us tonight."
This is the first time Cal State Fullerton has lost at home since September 24, 2013 against Washington State.
The Spartans head home from California with a 2-0-0 record, and will get ready to face Eastern Michigan in their home opener this Friday at DeMartin Stadium at 2 p.m.
"It's a confidence booster for sure," said Saxton. "Any time you can go out to California and come back with two wins is huge. We still have a lot of work to do but this was a great start for us."
