
Women's Soccer Suffers Tough Loss at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Anne Marie Thomas scored just over five minutes into the second overtime to give the Iowa Hawkeyes a 1-0 win over the Michigan State women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon in Iowa City, Iowa. The loss drops the Spartans to 7-4-2 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten. Iowa improved to 10-3 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.
The winning goal came off a free kick by Melanie Pickert from approximately 35 yards out. Thomas was able to deflect the ball into the right side of the net.
The Hawkeyes had the majority of scoring chances on the afternoon, outshooting the Spartans by a count of 23-6. Spartan goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder kept MSU in the game by making 11 saves.
Iowa's Ashley Catrell had a game-high six shots, including five on goal, while Paige Wester and Rachel Van Poppelen both had two for MSU.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on Ohio State at 6 p.m.
