Spartans Tie for 13th Place at Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Michigan State women's golf team finished in a tie for 13th place at the Tar Heel Invitational, which concluded Sunday afternoon at the Finley Golf Course on the campus of North Carolina. The Spartans shot a 298 in the third round on Sunday and closed at 26-over-par (300-292-298--890).
No. 7 Duke won the elite 18-team field that featured 10 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 25 and 16 in the top 50.
Senior Liz Nagel led the Spartans with a 1-over-par 217 (74-72-71) to tie for 14th place. Nagel shot her third under-par round of the season with a 71 on Sunday to move up eight places on the leaderboard. The DeWitt, Mich., native tallied three birdies in her final round.
Freshman Kelly Grassel, who fired back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71 to start the tournament, carded a 4-over 76 on Sunday to finish in 19th place at 2-over 218. In three collegiate tournaments, Grassel now owns two top-20 finishes.
Senior Allyssa Ferrell compiled the second-lowest round of the day for the Spartans with a 74 and finished in 53rd place at 10-over 226 (75-77-74).
Junior Lindsey McPherson rounded out the team scoring on Sunday with a 77 and closed with a 237 (81-79-77). Fellow junior Trisha Witherby finished the tournament at 230 (80-72-78).
The Spartans will close out their fall tournament schedule at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., on Oct. 25-27.
