Men's Golf Seventh After Opening Day of Seminole Intercollegiate

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Michigan State men's golf team opened the 2012 Seminole Intercollegiate on Friday, shooting a 3-over par 287 at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla. The Spartans are in seventh place in the 18-team tournament, and were led by even par 71 rounds from senior Chris Mory, and juniors Dave Ellis and Matthew Moseley.
"Overall it was a day where we really missed some opportunities, but it was also a day where we could have let it be a problem, however we rebounded nicely," said Spartan head coach Casey Lubahn. "I was real happy with the middle of our rounds and how determined we looked, but we can't afford to get off to those starts and give up shots down the stretch. I believe we will play better in the next couple rounds, and our guys believe it as well."
The Spartan trio who shot even par today are among a group tied for 24th overall. Junior Dan Ellis shot a 3-over par 74 and is tied for 52nd, while freshman McCormick Clouser is tied for 82nd at 6-over 77. Mory leads MSU with four birdies today, while the Ellis twins and Moseley each had three in the first round. The Ellis twins also tied for the best score on the par-3s among the field at 1-under par.
No. 8 Georgia Tech and No. 28 Florida State, also the tournament host, are tied for first after the initial 18 holes at 6-under par 278. Kennesaw State's Jeff Karlsson paces the individual leaderboard at 6-under par 65.
Tomorrow's second round is set to start at 7:52 a.m. for the Spartans.
