East Lansing, Mich. -- - An overtime score by Emily Jaffe off a corner play was the golden goal in MSU's 2-1 overtime loss to Michigan on Wednesday evening in Ann Arbor. Keeper Courtney Clem had a strong outing with six saves, but the Spartans suffered their second straight loss and fell to 8-5-2, 2-4-1 in Big Ten play.
The game-winner came in the final minute of the first overtime period . Shelina Zadorsky took the corner and found Jaffe, and she headed home the game-winner, her first tally of the season.
The Spartans had taken a 1-0 lead in the opening half on a header by Paige Wester. Set up by Olivia Stander and Megan Marsack, Wester got her second of the year in the 29th minute.
Three minutes later, the host Wolverines had the equalizer. Shelby Chambers-Garcia scored her fourth of the season off a corner play, which bent into the net and off of Clem for the score.
MSU was outshot 21-15, but had seven corners to Michigan's five. Michigan keeper Hayley Kopmeyer made three saves for the Wolverines, who improved to 12-2-1, 6-0-1 in the Big Ten.
The Spartans, who have gone 0-4-0 on the road in Conference play this season, will return to the friendly confines of DeMartin Stadium for a Sunday tilt against Indiana. Kickoff is 12 noon.
