The longest running collegiate golf tournament in the nation, the Fossum Invitational was moved to the fall last season. This year's field includes Alabama State, Canisius, Evansville, IPFW, IUPUI, Michigan State, North Dakota, Oakland, St. Francis (Pa.), Tennessee State, Valparaiso and Youngstown State.
The Spartan five this weekend will consist of seniors Dan Ellis and Chris Mory, sophomore Carson Castellani, and freshmen McCormick Clouser and Patrick Colburn. Participating as individuals for MSU will be seniors Jimmy Dewling and Dave Ellis, juniors Will Morris and Matthew Moseley, and sophomore Gareth Blease.
This weekend will mark the 44th Fossum/Spartan Invitational. The tournament began in 1966 and was renamed to honor the longtime great Spartan coach Bruce Fossum in 1992. Three times - 1986, 1998 and 2008 - the tournament was not held as Michigan State hosted the Big Ten Championship at Forest Akers West. The Spartans have won the Fossum 11 times, including the last four. Individually, 12 MSU golfers have earned medalist honors, including James Ross topping Chris Mory in a playoff last season.
