
Powers, Solberg Win Women's Collegiate Team Championship

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Michigan State golfers Caroline Powers and Lindsey Solberg claimed the 2011 Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship by one stroke after combining to shoot a 12-under 276 in the second annual event.
The unique format, which had 54 two-person teams, featured alternate shot in round one, best ball in round two, and the aggregate score of the two players in round three.
The tournament, presented by the National Golf Coaches Association, was held at the Achasta Golf Course by Reynolds, a par-72, 6,995-yard Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, located in Dahlonega, Ga., one hour north of Atlanta.
Powers and Solberg entered the third and final round on Thursday in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with Virginia's Elizabeth Brightwell and Portland Rosen and Vanderbilt's Marina Alex and Laura Stratton. The Spartan duo combined to shoot a 1-under 143 on Thursday, as Powers shot a 71 and Solberg carded a 72. Virginia and Vanderbilt both finished one shot back at 277.
In the first round alternate shot format on Tuesday, Powers and Solberg teamed up for a 4-under 68, and in the second round best ball format on Wednesday, they compiled a 7-under 65.
In addition, Lindsey McPherson and Christine Meier tied for eighth at the event with a 2-under 286 (73-67-146).
