BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michigan State completed a crazy weekend of baseball on Sunday with a 7-4 loss at Indiana. The game was halted for 92 minutes in the fifth inning due to heavy rain. Earlier today, the Spartans dropped a 13-12 decision to IU in the 15th inning of the game that was suspended Saturday night due to darkness.
After a scoreless first inning, the Spartans got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Jared Hook led off with a walk and was moved to third when Joel Fisher followed with a double. A wild pitch scored Hook for the first run of the game and pushed Fisher over to third. Justin Scanlon continued his hot weekend with a RBI single up the middle to plate Fisher and put MSU ahead 2-0.
Indiana did not let the Spartan led last long as it posted four runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 4-2. The Hoosiers used back-to-back RBI singles from Justin Cureton and Dustin DeMuth, and a two-run single by Micah Johnson to get to MSU starter Andrew Waszak.
The Hoosiers expanded their lead to 5-2 with a run in the fourth, but MSU cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. Ryan Jones began the scoring with a two-out double down the right field line to score Jordan Keur who led off the inning with a single. Jeff Holm followed with a RBI single past the left side of the IU infield to cut the Indiana lead to 5-4.
Indiana bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth for what would be the 7-4 final. The scoring began with a RBI single from DeMuth and concluded after the 92 minute rain delay with a sacrifice fly from T.C. Knipp.
Holm and Jones each posted two hits for the Spartans.
Waszak took the loss for MSU, going only four innings and allowing five runs on nine hits and three walks. Tim Simpson was solid out of the bullpen for the Spartans, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four.
The Spartans (31-18, 13-8) remain in first place in the Big Ten, one game ahead of Illinois and Minnesota. MSU concludes conference play with a three-game home series with Northwestern on May 19-21.
Michigan State returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Notre Dame for a 5:35 p.m. first pitch. A radio broadcast of the game will be available on SpartanSportsNetwork.com.
