TOURNAMENT NOTES
- UCLA is playing in its 44th NCAA Tournament and now has an all-time record of 100-36. Michigan State was playing in its 25th NCAA Tournament and with the loss has an all-time record of 52-24.
- UCLA now leads the all-time series between the two programs 6-2, but despite a combined 69 tournament appearances and 25 Final Fours, tonight's contest was the first NCAA Tournament matchup for the two schools.
- Michigan State is now 2-1 at the St. Pete Times Forum in NCAA Tournament play and 3-3 in the Tampa area. The Spartans entered tonight's contest having played in St. Petersburg in 1994 (1-1, 1st and 2nd Rounds) and 1999 (0-1, National Semifinal), and in Tampa in 2003 (2-0, 1st and 2nd Rounds).
- UCLA is making their first appearance in Tampa for the NCAA Tournament.
- Attendance: The attendance for the second session, which includes the Florida-UCSB game, is 15,508.
GAME NOTES
- UCLA never trailed in the game and gradually built a 42-24 halftime lead, including a 7-0 run in the last 2:55 of the period.
- The Bruins outrebounded Michigan State by a 25-16 margin in the first half, including 11 offensive rebounds that led to 12 second-chance points.
- Michigan State cut the UCLA lead to 10 with 13:16 to go on a pair of Delvin Roe free throws, but UCLA responded with 11 unanswered points to retake a commanding lead at 60-39.
- Michigan State outscored UCLA 37-18 over the last 13 minutes, but couldn't capitalize on a final possession chance to win the game.
UCLA NOTES
- The Bruins improve to 33-11 all-time in their opening round NCAA Tournament games.
- UCLA hasn't lost its NCAA Tournament opening game since 2005, which now includes five total appearances. The Bruins have lost their first tournament game only seven times in 44 appearances.
- Malcom Lee's three steals were a season high. He notched two steals four times this season.
- Tyler Honeycutt, a .345 three-point shooter this season, connected on 3-of-4 attempts en route to 16 points.
- Reeves Nelson posted his 13th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
MICHIGAN STATE NOTES
- Michigan State has made 14-consecutive NCAA appearances and this is only the fourth time in 14 seasons that the Spartans have failed to win their first game.
- Michigan State is now 0-3 as a No. 10 seed, losing in 1985 and 2002 as a 10 seed as well.
- Draymond Green posted his second triple-double of the season with 23 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high tying 10 assists. It is only the seventh official triple-double in NCAA Tournament history.
- Kalin Lucas scored all 11 of his points in the second half after going 0-for-7 from the floor in the first period.
